Recherchons Beta testeur pour Okawix
Bonjour,
Nous recherchons des beta testeurs pour la première version d’Okawix.
En effet, entre deux clients nous avons dégagé un peu de temps pour finaliser notre version d’Okawix, principalement sous Macintosh car même si nous avons un mac mini nous rencontrions énormément de problème avec cette OS.
Nous avons tenu compte des divers remarques formulé par Derckson, qui se reconaitra et de Martin Walker.
Okawix est un logiciel qui permet de visualiser les articles de Wikipedia en mode déconnecté.
La sortie officielle est prévu pour le 1 Juin, en fonction des différents retour que nous pourrons avoir.

Le logiciel sera diffusé sous licence GPL et utilise les technos mozilla (XUL/Javascript, composants XPCOM en C++). Les sources seront disponibles en même temps que le binaire

Mon mois de juin est chargé/blindé, mais j’ai 4 OS (Ubuntu / XP /Vista /OS X ) sous la main (et l’habitude de tester les trucs sur clés USB
)

I wrote this error in detail sourceforge. When okawix was Kiwix 0.7. Is exactly the same error
Is very important fix this error before wikimania.

Tout simplement merci pour ce logiciel, ça faisait un moment que j’attendais une mise à jour de “Moulin” avec un moteur de recherche rapide, en vain… merci pour ce travail bénévole.

Je suis dispo pour tester car je suis en train de mettre un wiki en place pour une communauté d’étudiant et ils n’auront pas toujours de connexion dispo. le wiki tournera sur eeepc (900 et 901) avec xandro

J’ai quelques bugs à vous soumettre, mais le tracker est désactivé sur la page sourceforge du projet.

Bonjour,
Je viens d’essayer de lancer okawix sur un GNU/Linux (Archlinux) 64 bits et echec… Rien ne démarre… (peut être que le code est pour du 32 bits…).
Est-ce possible d’avoir le code du logiciel (qui est bien libre ?) histoire de pouvoir le compiler soit même ???

La 1ère, comment s’effectue la synchro entre wikipédia et okawix ?
La 2ème, est-il possible d’utiliser okawix derrière un proxy ?

Bonjour. J’ai installé Okawix hier matin avec quelques petits corpus Wiki, ça a très bien fonctionné. Par contre, l’après-midi mon PC s’est planté complètement. Est-ce un pur hasard? Message au démarrage: fichier hal.dll corrompu, Windows ne peut pas démarrer. Avez-vous entendu ceci d’autres utilisateurs?
Mon PC est un netbook 10 pouces Samsung NC10 avec Windows XP Home. Processeur et systè;e à bas prix très modeste mais je n’ai eu aucun ennui avant l’installation d’Okawix.
Autre chose: Okawix s’installe très facilement et fonctionne bien mais les caractères sont trop petits et ne peuvent pas être modifiés. L’interface pourrait être plus flexible… Pourquoi ne pas faire apparaître les textes dans un navigateur plutôt qu’une interface propriétaire? Est-ce difficile techniquement?

Effectivement je pense que c’est un pur hasard puisque j’ai également un samsung nc10 et que je n’ai jamais rencontré de problème avec ce type de matériel.
Concernant la taille des caractères elle est paramétrable par le biais d’un clic droit sur la souris.
Notre navigateur n’est pas propriétaire puisque les sources sont disponibles sur SourceForge, et d’un autre côté Okawix est un produit autonome ce qui permet de s’affranchir de serveur de type apache ou bien mysql.

Bonjour, logiciel très sympa et utile.
Je suis sur Ubuntu et j’aurai aimé connaître l’endroit où les préférences sont enregistrées.
En effet, lorsque je supprime le dossier d’install et que j’en replace un, les mêmes préférences apparaîssent.

Pardon my English: does Okawix use the Wikimedia Data dumps (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_dumps)? The Okawix downloaded version of the Afrikaans Wikipedia is terribly outdated (January 2009), even though much more recent dumps are available.
Thanks for a great program, though! It has great potential for school environments and as being distributed in areas where proper internet access is still a bit of a problem (like South Africa).

Hello.
1.Is there any possibility to make a portable version of okawix?
When I install Okawix on a USB-Stick und start it on another computer it doesn’t show up the downloaded wikis.
2. I changed my language to DE and now okawix doesn’t start any more. It says
“XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://interfacewiki/content/interfacewiki.xul
Line Number 30, Column 1:<window xmlns:html=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xmlns=”http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul”
Reinstalling Okawix didn’t solve the Problem! Are there any files still stored on the Computer?

@skjern > 1. Yeah, you can make a portable version of Okawix. After installing the wikis in “local”, you’ll have to drag&drop them to the “embed” contents (just start a drag action on a wiki name in the sidebar and the “embed” section will appear)
2. That’s a know bug with incomplete translation that has been fixed in SVN and that’ll be available in next Okawix release. For now, just edit your default/preferences/okawix-prefs.js file to change that line:
pref(”intl.locale.matchOS”, /*matchosBool*/false/***/);
to
pref(”intl.locale.matchOS”, /*matchosBool*/true/***/);
then you should be again to start Okawix again and switch back to english.

1. Worked well, I loaded the dumps via FDM and they just wouldn’t appear. But then I descovered right click -> load local dump. after that i dragged them to ‘embed’. Thanks!
2. First didn’t work. Then I just deleted the file ‘okawix-prefs.js’ and okawix started and I was able to change the location. But why didn’t reinstalling Okawix help? Are there any Informations stored in the registry? I also deleted all “okawix”-relatet entries in the reg but wouln’t work either.

@skjern > Reinstalling didn’t worked because Okawix stores your settings in your profile directory. On Windows that’s c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Linterweb\Okawix\Profiles\<something>.default\
Preferences are in the prefs.js file in that folder, I guess removing that file would have worked too…

Hi. Great work! Now I have the Wikipedia (without images) to browse offline!!!
One question - can I add the images to the dump I have (Okawix.Torrent.Pack.2009.08.23-SladePublishing) rather than do a full download again (I have a very limited and sporatic Internet connection)?
Also, if I could be so bold as to make a suggestion, wouldn’t it be economically more beneficial to offer USB keys of perhaps 8 gig and have the files spread over 3 or 4 of them? A self-extracting .Rar or .Zip file could easily prompt for the next key, simplifying installation. The cost would be much less. Imagine, if you got the keys at wholesale, loaded them with Okawix and the dumps, you could sell the keys at normal retail price and the purchasers would then get the software for free! Sounds to me like a good marketing strategy - and your company could make a good profit. It might be worth a try…

J’ai testé OKAWIX sous windows 7, j’ai réussi à télécharger l’encyclopédie en français et anglais mais
quand il s’agit de télécharger les images, il semble que le programme d’installation demande de plus
en plus de mémoire et finit par se planter et rester incomplet.
Donc la wikipedia en mode statique fonctionne mais seulement pour le texte.
La plus petite des 2 est celle en français, qui demande 8 gigas mais le programme
ne semble pas capable de le faire avec une machine ayant 3 gigas de mémoire.
Je n’ai pas testé la version unix, je vais l’essayer demain.

I’m not sure exactly what you are asking - whether you mean the Okawix program files themselves, or the downloaded data file (the 5gig+ file).
If you mean the downloaded data file, maybe this is useful. (This is about the initial installation of the data file into the Okawix program.)
The downloaded data file can be anywhere - start Okawix, try left-clicking and find where it says “add new corpus from local file”. Click that, navigate to where the data file is, and then it will unzip the files into your Okawix installation directory (without changing the original downloaded data file). I think that is what I did to get things working - I hope I’m remembering correctly.
Warning! Be patient - it takes a _long_ time to decompress and create the actual files that Okawix uses - if I remember it took 5 or 10 minutes.

I would have a suggestion for a new feature: Is it possible to make a built-in http-server, so that remote users in my network can access to the db?
and i would recommend to rename the tool to “okawiki”, “wix” means in german something like ‘to jerk off’^^

Sorry for writing in English, but my french is hardly existent, so I hoped that you guys might be able to reply in English… thanks anyway for your great software!
I was seriously considering using your software as an offline browser for a volunteer project that I’m leading in 3 weeks in Sierra Leone, Africa. I’m leading a group of experts in a project that deploys computing, media and solar power in our orphanage and boarding school in one of the poorest place in the world. I wanted to use okawix for wikipedia, wikibooks, and wikiversity including all the images for all. I’ve downloaded the content and used the software for some while.
I’m facing two main issues that prevent me from using the software:
1) The main problem is that the wikibooks version (and the wikipedia version?) is very outdated and lacking many resources. Considering that our orphanage is offline, and very remote, I’d like to supply them with a pretty recent database. Is it possible to download more recent databases for the discussed depots?
2) I’d like to have all the okawix “data” files installed on a main NAS device, and have all the okawix-running-laptops pointing to that device by default. I couldn’t understand if there’s a simple way to configure okawix this way.
I hope you can assist me urgently as this would be very useful for our project,
